Carved jade hair ornament, Liangzhu Culture

Hair ornament, carved from jade. The piece, a ‘头箍’, is shaped like a wide ring with a concave profile and subtly everted edges. The outer surface is decorated with an intricate pattern of archaic scrolls. It shows a brown and reddish patina, the result of ageing. Liangzhu culture (c. 3300-2300 BC). or later.
