Pair of ceramic figures ‘Komainu’, Japan, 20th century

Modelled ceramic decorated with a combination of glazes in cream, rusty brown and cobalt blue tones. Both figures represent mythical guardian lions in a seated position, modelled with great vigour and exaggerated zoomorphic features, emphasizing their manes and flaming tails. They show signs of wear due to ageing and restoration.
