Description.
Bronze specimen of the Æ Pentonkion type, minted at the Messana mint (Sicily) by the Mamertines. The obverse shows a laureate bust of Ares, while the reverse shows a horseman on his horse. It stands out for its dense, natural olive green patina, with deposits of surface mineralisation. This type of issue is catalogued under the references CNS 25 by Calciati, SNG ANS 441 and Sear 1144. The condition is rated BC+.
