White jade figure ‘Lotus Root’, Qing dynasty

Translucent white jade. Depicts a lotus root (lian'ou), showing on its reverse side the characteristic internal cavities of the tuber, accompanied by sinuous leaves, openwork and in relief, integrating sinuous stems that wrap around the body. Shows patina due to age. Qing dynasty (1644–1912).
