Description.

Magnificent large format sculpture representing Guăng Mù Tiān (广目天王), protector deity of Buddhist temples and one of the Four Heavenly Kings, also known as “Virūpākṣa” or “The All-Seeing One” revered for his role as defender of the Dharma.

This figure, of strong presence and elaborate detail, is made of cast bronze and covered with application of gold pigment, evidencing polychrome techniques typical of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It is presented standing in a firm position, symbol of stability and solidity. The attitude of the deity is of great authority and solemnity: the right arm flexed with the hand clenched in a fist, holding a small animal, while the left hand remains open in a gesture of protection or blessing.

The face, with a serious and concentrated expression, exhibits powerful features: marked arched eyebrows, almond-shaped eyes with a low and serene gaze, and a prominent urn on the forehead, symbol of spiritual vision. The head is crowned by an elaborate headdress with flaming and floral motifs, accompanied by fine curls and pearls in relief.

The body and limbs are protected by a masterfully decorated armor, composed of scale reliefs, quadrangular plates, and prominent applications of lion masks, symbols of power and protection. The shoulders are adorned with shoulder pads of undulating feline head forms with open jaws, while the skirts and decorative ribbons are arranged in flowing scrolls that add movement to the composition.

The surface retains traces of the original application of gilding pigment, although there are areas of wear, cracking and slight flaws. Under the layer of gilding, the red bowl base is clearly distinguishable, typical of the technique of gilding on metal. The interior of the figure shows traces of traditional bronze casting, with remains of the internal structure and marks typical of the artisanal process, evidencing its age.

Due to its monumental dimensions, exquisite workmanship and level of iconographic detail, this figure is destined to occupy a prominent place in a temple or altar, functioning as a symbolic guardian of sacred spaces.
