Description.

Carved jade figure in the form of a protective lion with a figure on its back. The animal is lying on all four legs while showing its teeth with its head facing forward. The details of the face and body are very well rendered, and the front shows holes for the insertion of a cord. Stains or patina due to age are visible.

The form of the 'lion' or 'mythical beast' in ancient Chinese myths and legends is derived from the transliteration of ancient Sanskrit. Images of these figures are depicted on ancient textiles, belt buckles, seals, bells or buttons to ward off evil spirits. During the Han dynasty, a sculptural tradition emerged with a greater interest in depicting fabulous animals and beasts in durable materials such as jade, inspired by Taoist philosophy. Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD).

Size: 6.2 x 4.3 x 8.8 cm; Weight: 249 gr.
